NOTES:

Meta Analysis on Women & Fasting

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4960941/
“Fasting can be prescribed as a safe medical intervention as well as a lifestyle regimen which can improve women’s health in many folds.”

PART 2: WHY EVERY WOMAN SHOULD BE FASTING

Role of therapeutic fasting in women’s health: An overview
Metanalysis of 44 different peer reviewed studies

“Fasting has shown to improve the reproductive and mental health. It also prevents as well as ameliorates cancers and musculoskeletal disorders which are common in middle-aged and elderly women.”

Conditions that fasting can help women with:

Several different styles of fasting

1. Cancer
-FMD -inhibits tumor growth by inhibiting angiogenesis (blood supply to tumor)
-48 hr fast suppresses tumor growth
-intermittent fasting (13-15hrs everyday) 70% reduction in recurrence of breast cancer

2. PCOS (remember the hormonal hierarchy)
-fasting can reduce the chronic sympathetic overactivity in PCOS.
-This, in turn, will reduce stress neurohormone levels and ensure the physical and mental health.

-40women (age 20 to 40) with PCOS & no other health conditions (Ramadan Fasting)
-”This study showed that Ramadan fasting is a well known practice to reduce stress hormones in women with PCOS.”

The effect of Ramadan fasting on hypothalamic pituitary ovarian (HPO) axis in women with Polycystic Ovary syndrome

3. Musculoskeletal conditions

-Fasting has shown to affect the parathyroid hormone secretion and which is thought to be beneficial in improving bone health (OSTEOPOROSIS)

-fasting helps in weight loss and thereby helps in subsiding body mass index.[29] Reduction in weight will help in diluting the risk of fracture and other comorbidities.

-Fasting has shown to ameliorate clinical manifestations of (RA)
-Fasting for 7–10 days has shown to reduce pain, stiffness, and dependency on analgesics compared to the controls in RA patients

4. Metabolic health

Metabolic syndrome- most likely to develop in menopausal years (SWITCH FROM PRE TO POST MENOPAUSE)

5.Mental health
“80–85% of all women experience unpleasant menopausal symptoms at some points throughout their menopausal transition. The most common symptoms stated are hot flashes, night sweat, irritability, moodiness, tension, anxiety, and emotional instability.”

-Fasting also has shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and improve social functioning.[42]
-Fasting has been proved effective in diminishing stress and depression levels.[43]
-fasting effects on mood, such as changes in neurotransmitters, quality of sleep, and synthesis of neurotrophic factors.

-Many clinical observations relate an early (between day 2 and day 7) effect of fasting on depressive symptoms with an improvement in mood, alertness and a sense of tranquility reported by patients.
